Photographic Studio
Remodelling of an old car repair garage into a photography studio in Hammersmith, West London.
The project brief was organised into three defined needs; a new shooting studio, preparation/storage area and a client meeting space. In response to this, we created a new studio space that maximised daylight into the rear client area. We utilised the existing fabric of the former garage where possible, and provided a large area of robust storage.
The buildings main volume is treated as a light filled interior, with white washed walls and ceilings providing a clear, uninhibited setting for photography. Behind this space sits new joinery elements formed in birch plywood, creating a space of transition between the shooting studio and client area. We designed bespoke joinery that provides deep storage, to be flexible and house a range of photography equipment.
We opened up windows that had previously been boarded-up to create a more habitable client area. The original concrete slab is exposed, sand blasted and treated to provide a beautiful hard-wearing floor, whilst existing masonry walls have been revealed, stripped, and cleaned to express the buildings original fabric.
The project was designed in collaboration with James O’Brien (O’Brien Van der Steen Workshops).
