Span House

Full refurbishment of an existing mid-century Span House in Blackheath, London.

Designed in the late 1950’s by acclaimed architect Eric Lyons on behalf of Span Developments, the property was purchased by the client in a state of disrepair.

The project brief was to fully refurbish and modernise the existing property whilst reinstating original design features, characteristics and materiality where possible.

Working closely with the client, original layouts and finishes were studied to help inform the design and specification of interior spaces. Internal walls and glazed partitions (informed by original sizes and proportions) have been re-introduced, together with the faithful reinstatement of parquet flooring, fireplaces, bathroom tiles, fixtures & fittings.

The finished project balances careful retrofitting of original fabric and finishes with modern living requirements, providing a new family home that upholds the Span Housing ideals.

Site Plan

Harry’s attention to detail was so valuable throughout the whole project. We wanted a sensitive restoration of a number of important period details and Harry’s meticulous drawings and knowledge of materials and fixtures helped us achieve a modern interpretation of the original architect’s ideas.
